Als Lars Fiske und Steffen Kverneland in ihrer norwegischen Heimat die Ausstellung “Olaf Gulbransson und der Simplicissimus“ besuchten, waren sie fasziniert von den “schwindelerregenden Tuschezeichnungen“ des Karikaturisten und Malers. Auch ein Film über Gulbranssons Haus am Tegernsee begeisterte: “Der reinste Olymp! Da müssen wir hin.“ Die beiden Comickünstler brachen also auf. Sie brachten ihre Eindrücke über den gebürtigen Norweger und seine Wahlheimat Bayern auf ebenso ungewöhnliche wie mitreißende Art zu Papier.Ein Comic, im dem scheinbar willkürlich der Zeichenstil gewechselt wird und der alles andere als chronologisch wohlgeordnet aus dem Leben seiner Hauptfigur erzählt, kann eigentlich nicht funktionieren und dürfte beim Lesen Kopfschmerzen verursachen. Doch das absolute Gegenteil ist der Fall. Der scheinbar zufällige Wechsel zwischen dem eher plastischen Malstil von Kverneland und dem linearen Kubismus von Fiske macht die Geschichte dreidimensional. Die vor Ort in Bayern gesammelten Eindrücke und die Begegnungen mit Zeitzeugen wie Gulbranssons Enkelin gewinnen dadurch eine Tiefe, die in dieser Form nur im Medium Comic möglich ist.Das Buch von Fiske und Kverneland enthält zudem auch noch Fotos und Originalzeichnungen von Gulbransson, was das Lesevergnügen noch steigert. Doch bei aller Begeisterung für den Naturburschen Gulbransson, der gerne nackt durch die Bergwelt hüpfte und mit seinem Hintern Nüsse knacken konnte, sparen sie auch nicht aus, dass sich der eigentlich unpolitische Karikaturist während des “Tausendjährigen Reiches“ nicht eben mit Ruhm bekleckerte. An diesem unglaublich vielschichtigen Werk werden sich zukünftige Comicbiografien messen müssen, auch jene die Fiske und Kverneland anschließend über Kurt Schwitters und Edvard Munch in Szene setzten.
